URGENCY FOR LABOR TO MATCH FEDERAL CROWN OF THORNS FUNDING

Dive Queensland has welcomed the announcement from the Federal Government to continue the funding for the vital Crown of Thorns (COTS) Eradication Program of $300,000, but is demanding the State Government match it.

Dive Queensland claims the Federal Government's commitment is in stark contrast to the Beattie Government's decision to axe its share of the funding for this essential program.

"It's time for the State Government to declare its position on reef protection. Without this vital program reef operators will face an uphill battle to control crown of thorns infestations on the Great Barrier Reef," said Dive Queensland Spokesperson, Stephen Welsh.

Currently there are major outbreaks in the Townsville and Airlie Beach regions which are subject to constant monitoring and removal of Crown of Thorns and if the State Government isn't forthcoming with its share of the funding, the program will be shut down within four months.

"If Federal Government funding had not been secured in the next few days, crews would've had to have been sacked and the boat handed back to its owners. We can't allow this to happen, and people need to realize that while the announcement of the Federal funding is great news, it will only give us a maximum of four months operating capability to continue the program, so the State Government really needs to act fast," said Mr Welsh.

Over the past 12 months divers have eradicated more than 40,000 starfish at over 130 sites between Port Douglas and the Whitsundays. There is still no research to show the cause of the outbreaks.

It's amazing how many people buckle when it comes to interviews. Whether it be TV, Radio or Print, many people seem to become self conscious and start to stumble over words. If you've ever been interviewed, I'm sure you would agree that television interviews or live radio interviews are the most daunting.

The fact that you're every word is being recorded is off putting to say the least, but there are a number of measures you can take to ensure the exercise is made that little bit easier to cope with.

Television

• Take the time to make sure you're looking presentable before appearing on camera.
• Stand still and don't fidget when involved in a TV interview as it will distract from what you're saying.

Radio

• No-one can see what you're doing when you're being interviewed on the radio, so if having your notes in front of you makes you feel more comfortable, then do so.
• Don't speak too close to the mouth piece of the phone if it's a phone interview, as your voice can start to crackle.
• If you're speaking in a studio on a microphone, don't speak too close to it as your voice may "pop".

Print

• With print interviews you can have your notes in front of you as well.
• Try and be descriptive in what you're saying, as newspapers don't have the benefit of moving pictures or sound – the words not only need to tell the story, but they need to create distinctive images in peoples minds when they're reading it.
• The number one rule is try to be yourself, as you will come across more natural.

Bear in mind that the journalist or interviewer is so used to carrying out interviews with various talent, that they will often forget about how nervous you are feeling. Time is of the essence for all journalists, so don't take it personally if they don't have time to make small talk. It's up to you to be fully prepared by the time the interview takes place, and if you aren't, don't go through with the interview. It's better to take an extra five to ten minutes to gather your thoughts, than to go in trying to wing it and end up crashing and burning and embarrassing the hell out of yourself.

The aim of all interviews is just to have an open and honest discussion with one another. As hard as it may be, try to forget that it's a media interview and just speak as if you were talking to a friend or colleague.

Local WIN News Reporter Jennelle Jeffery has decided to leave the tropical town of Cairns and head for a small village in China where she'll be teaching English.

Jennelle had a farewell with all the local media hounds at Casino's 1936 and we hear there were a few sloshed journalists roaming the streets in the early hours of the morning.

We wish Jennelle all the very best and we hope she returns home to the world of news soon.

ABC TV's North Queensland Senior Reporter Jamie Rule has also decided to leave us and head for the Sunshine Coast. Jamie is returning to his old roots at Network Ten where he'll be a TV Journalist and also back up VJ (Video Journalist).

Jamie has been based in Townsville for the past six months covering news stories between the Torres Strait and Mackay, so we're sure he'll be glad to be going to a place where his news coverage area isn't so vast.

Business Woman of the Year

The prestigious Cairns Business Women of the Year awards were announced at a gala function held at the Hotel Sofitel Reef Casino.

Business Woman of the Year went to Therese Plath, Partner of Ray White Central (pictured right). The overwhelmed and emotional winner said her long working hours and sacrifice to make her business the success that it is has been all worthwhile.

"I am so proud to have won this award, I am so proud of my business and I have always strived for quality and I think that is what's made my business what it is today. I also have to thank my family for bearing my long working hours and supporting me every step of the way,

They say behind every good man is a very strong woman, but I think we as women have really changed that role right around," Mrs Plath said.

Corporate Business Woman of the Year went to Bev Snell from Downunder Tours (pictured left). Mrs Snell also emotional when handed her award said she wouldn't be such a strong business woman if it wasn't for her outstanding staff.

"I am overwhelmed to have been named Corporate Business Woman of the Year and when I look back at all the previous winners it certainly is a prestigious award to win. I'd have to say, my staff are fantastic and they've given me the ability to excel because they are so supportive. I think good staff are the key to any good manger," said Mrs Snell.

Channel Nine's Today Show News Reader, Sharyn Ghidella (pictured right) was the MC for the night, which went off without a hitch. In Touch Media and M.A.D. Events also made a spectacular impression on the business community with its lavish baroque and salsa theme and fantastic audio visual and video displays.

The judges said these two lucky winners were the cream of the crop and their passion for business and will to achieve really set them apart from the rest.

The Jean Skea Encouragement Award was presented to Reshmee Gunesh (pictured below), a Marketing Lecturer at James Cook University.

"Although we are women in business none of us can do what we do without the men in our lives – our fathers, our brothers, husbands and sons give us the support that we all need to get ahead in life," she said.

The winners shared in over $20,000 worth of prizes, but the biggest prize of all, was to take out the 2003 titles.

"For a business woman to receive an accolade of this calibre is outstanding to say the least. The award winners were very deserving as their passion for what they do is obvious in everything that they do," said CBWC President, Melanie Wicks.

QLD Telstra Small Business of the Year

Pro Arch Podiatry Centre has been named QLD Telstra Small Business of the Year.

The local business won the 6-20 employee category and owners Christine and Tyson say, it's hard to come back down to earth after winning such an award.

"We're feeling very proud and still on cloud nine at the moment and wanting to tell the world about our win," said Christine Franklin.

The Telstra & Australian Governments' Small Business Awards™ are organised on the basis of business size. There are four categories in total.

The finalists who Pro-Arch were up against just goes to show how proud they should be of winning the award.

Finalists:

• Blue Banana Hair and Spa (Townsville)
• Coronis Realty (Brisbane)

This is the largest, most common category and usually the hardest to win as there are so many entrants. Over 100 entrants were then short listed to 6 finalists.

"It was like the CBWC Awards Night but only better (and that was hard to beat). Spot lights on the winners, drum rolls and emotional winner's music to walk up to the stage with."

"My husband Tyson was the one who did all the work with regards to the submissions, interviews etc. Tyson says the feeling is too hard to describe, he feels like he has just won an Academy Award," said Mrs Franklin.

Rosie's Run was on Sunday 31st August at Fogarty Park

Rosie's Run was on Sunday 31st August at Fogarty Park on the Cairns Esplanade. Many got out their running shoes and headed down to the 3 to 5 kilometre run/walk to raise money for The Cairns Combined Women's Services.

But it wasn't all walking and running, there was loads of entertainment, champagne and raffles.

All fundraising (in the thousands of dollars) created through the Rosie's Run event benefits Cairns based organisations which directly assist the women and children of the Cairns area.

This year's recipient of the funds "The Cairns Combined Women's Services", offer assistance to Cairns women in need of support during crisis situations.

Each year Rosie's Run also donates money to funds which support young athletes of the Cairns area to encourage them in their sporting careers.

Palm Cove Fiesta - 21st September, Esplanade, Palm Cove

Tables for the annual Palm Cove Fiesta are now available.

Thousands of party goers are expected to flock to Palm Cove in September for what has become one of the biggest events on the Festival Cairns calendar. The Pacific Toyota Palm Cove Fiesta is a major drawcard for not only Far North Queenslanders, but domestic and international visitors to the destination each year.

Bedminster Biofilter Rebuild Complete Ahead Of Schedule

Cairns Waste Management Group is proud to announce that the biofilter rebuild has been completed ahead of schedule and the odour at the waste plant has almost disappeared.

Extensive works have been carried out at the Bedminster plant over the past couple of months and CWMG has spent a significant amount of money in employing consultants to fix the odour problem.

Both the front and the back biofilters at the plant have been completely rebuilt after design faults were identified.

"We have had staff working around the clock to try and get this odour issue under control and we are very happy with the result to date. Obviously there is still a slight odour at the plant and we will be fine tuning the modifications we've made over the coming weeks," said CWMG Manager Neil Olsson.

The bacteria in the new media is now expected to work to reduce the odour even further.

The operation of the Bedminster system has gone unhindered while the work has been carried out and Mr Ollson says the staff at the plant need to be commended for their commitment to fixing the problem so soon.

"Fixing the odour issue has been our top priority and I can honestly say that the operational and local contractural staff we employ here at the plant are the best in their field and I think they really deserve to be commended for their hard work over the past few weeks. They have exceeded our expectations and completed the task way ahead of schedule," said Mr Olsson.

CWMG also say complaints at the plant have been almost non-existent over the past four weeks and the support for the Bedminster plant has been fantastic.

"We have opened up the site to members of the public to come and have at look at the work being carried out which I think has been a good move as people can see the progress as it occurs. The response from people who have visited the site has been very positive. They are generally very impressed with how the bedminster system operates, converting waste into a useable compost within a matter of weeks. "he said.

The finals were announced on Tuesday 2 September

Over 150 guests were present when the 2003 winners of the Annual Australian Institute of Managements Management Excellence Awards were announced at the Sofitel Reef Casino, Cairns.

Winners of the awards were as follows:

Professional Manager of the Year
Peter Goulding from Horwath Kehoe Smith. Peter's brief when he took up his present position was to bring together three long-established accounting firms into one integrated, profitable company. Peter succeeded in this challenge and was selected as the winner due to his high level of professional skills as well as the skills of change management. His personal maturity, ability to stand back and see the big picture and on-going attention to detail for both the business and its people were also rated highly as desirable for a Professional Manager.

Young Manager of the Year
Silvanna Morris from the BESTLAN Group of Companies. Silvanna impressed the judging panel with her drive, determination and courage. Her successful international marketing strategy has enabled the Bestian Group of Companies, which is based in Tully, to position itself well for further growth and has earned her the respect of both colleagues and customers.

Owner Manager of the Year
June Hannan from Hannan Optical. June's passion for business and sustainable financial outcomes resulting in a total involvement in business processes made her a strong advocate for Owner Manager businesses. Her courage not to accept the conventional and to seek high levels of personal development qualified June as a worthy recipient of this award.

Rural/Remote Manager of the Year
Frank Sciacca from Pacific Coast Eco Bananas. Frank's questioning of the status quo and belief that anything can be changed for the better combined with a genuine commitment to creating a sustainable business has taken him to the forefront of banana growing in NQ and Australia.
