How Chocolate Makes You Happy
It’s no coincidence that people, especially women,
naturally reach for chocolate when they are feeling
blue. The hundreds of compounds that compose
chocolate, have numerous effects on our nervous
system, through the release of neurotransmitters,
which can have great impacts upon our mood.
|
Endorphins & Serotonin
Eating chocolate increases the level
of endorphins and serotonin that the
brain releases. Endorphins are a happy
neurotransmitter, which help to lessen
pain and reduce stress levels, and
serotonin is a known anti-depressant.
Phenylethylamine
Phenylethylamine is a unique
neurotransmitter released by chocolate.
It causes changes in blood-sugar levels
and blood pressure, which leads to
feelings of excitement and alertness. It
is often referred to as the ‘love drug’,
because it quickens pulse rate,
resulting in a similar feeling to being
in love. |

Anandamide
Anandamide, a compound found in
chocolate, causes the production of
dopamine, which leads to feelings of
well-being. Anandamide is a naturally
occurring transmitter in the brain, but
it tends to break down quickly.
Chocolate, besides adding to the levels
of anandamide, also contains two other
compounds which work to slow the
breakdown of anandamide, thus extending
the feeling of happiness.
Theobromine
Theobromine, another compound in
chocolate, acts as a stimulant similar
to caffeine. It is also linked to having
properties that cause mental and
physical relaxation.
|
|
Chocolate, has a history of being known
as aphrodisiac. It is easy to see why,
when you combine it’s ability to quicken
the heart rate, create feelings of
euphoria, cause relaxation, and send
pleasurable feelings through the brain.
Not all chocolate, however, contains the
same benefits. The higher the cocoa
content in the chocolate, the better it
is for you. For this reason, dark
chocolate (and the higher the cocoa
percentage) is best. |

So when you're feeling a down, and need a little
pick me up, reach for a piece of dark chocolate.

How Coffee can Save your Life
We all know that coffee tastes amazing… and let’s face it, if you are
reading this, it means that you agree. But, I bet you didn’t know that
it’s also good for you! Scientists have conducted extensive studies on
the health benefits of coffee, muscle pain relief, slowing Alzheimer’s,
the list goes on.
Follow our bi-monthly newsletter, as we discover some of these
findings.
 |
Coffee and Muscle Pain
Moderate doses of caffeine, the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee,
have been suggested to cut post-workout muscle pain by up to 48%.
A study, published in The Journal of Pain, gave one group of
participants no caffeine, and another group a moderate dose of caffeine,
1 hr before they all completed the same intense workout. 1-2 days after
the workout, the muscle pain of both groups was compared.
What the study found, was that, the amount of caffeine contained
in 2 cups of coffee, an reduce postworkout muscle pain by nearly 50%.
The findings have been found to be particularly relevant to
people who are new to exercise, or have returned to exercise after a
long break, as they tend to be the ones to experience the most muscle
soreness.
So far, the study has only been performed on young adults, so it
is unclear whether similar results would occur in middle-older adults.
Results also appear better in people who are not regular coffee
drinkers, as they have a stronger reaction to caffeine (sorry to all you
coffee addicts out there). May be a good way to convert all your non
coffee drinking friends.
Disclaimer: These studies have been performed by accredited
researchers in the medical field, and are not a factual reflection of
any verified study, or view expressed by Coffee Works. The findings in
these studies are purely for entertainment purposes. Though there may be
some accuracy to these results, they are in no way a 100% guarantee. |
