From the President

Last month's lunch at Paradise Palms was yet another sell out occasion - 140 people! That's 140 people who were prepared to spend an extra 30-40 minutes on top of the usual hour or so for lunch to drive up to Clifton Beach for what has become the most powerful monthly networking event on the Cairns business calendar. What a fantastic turnout.

As I write this message, the submissions are being delivered to my office from the Award finalists. They are relieved to have achieved step one of the process (writing their submission), nervous about step two (facing the judging panel!) and excited about the final step - the 18th Cairns Business Women's Annual Gala Awards Night. I'm sure many of you have already been through this process, and I hope that many more will go through it in the future. In the meantime, I would ask you all to come and support these talented and accomplished business women and show Cairns why the club's annual awards have become such a credible and sought-after 'badge of honour'.

Seats for the Gala Awards Night on Saturday 16th August are limited and they have been selling like hot cakes, so don't wait until the last moment or you will miss out! Contact Kelly Morrison today on girlfridaycairns@bigpond.com or 4081-0121.

And talking about awards, many congratulations go to one of last year's winners (the recipient of the Special Judges Award), Christine Franklin and her husband Tyson from Pro-Arch Podiatry who recently won their category in the Queensland Telstra Small Business of the Year Awards. Read more here. They are now automatically entered into the National Awards which will be held in Melbourne on Friday 15th August - the night before our own awards night in Cairns.

And there's more good news! Last year's Corporate Business Woman of the Year winner, Lyn Griffiths from SeaFM, won her category in the Townsville Business Women's Awards last Friday night. Congratulations to both Lyn and Christine, and it's good to know their talents were recognised by the Cairns Business Women's Club in 2002! We obviously have very talented judges as well as finalists!

Congratulations to Angela Capitanio named Salesperson of the Year for the third time at the recent Cairns Real Estate Institute of Queensland Awards of Excellence. Next year Angela will be inducted into the REIQ Hall of Fame.

See you all at the August lunch.

The Guest Speaker - David Will

David Will David Will has worked in international education for 19 years. Trained as a language teacher he taught for 7 years in Spain, Scotland, Italy and Australia. In 1989 he set up International House Queensland (IHQ), the first stand-alone ELICOS centre in Cairns.

International House English Language College - Cairns

The Cairns operation now accounts for over a third of all international students in Cairns. It operates:

  • the International House Queensland Teacher Training centre (the first CELTA centre in Queensland)
  • the franchise for Intuition Homestudy programs in Australia

The college is the local exam centre for Cambridge proficiency exams and for IELTS. In 1993 it won the regional Small Business of the Year award for its class, and in 2002 it won the regional Exporter of the Year award for Education.

International House Qingdao
David is also Director of International House Qingdao, an important English Language college located in the Shandong province of China. This is operated in a joint venture arrangement with a local university.

Cairns University Project
David has been involved with the Cairns University project from the beginning and was a Director on the board when the original company was set up. He has now taken over as coordinator of the project in conjunction with partners Peter James and Frank Gasparin. These days David's time is taken up with the University project, running the three schools, and travelling to China.

Philosophy
"My philosophy is based upon the precept that people are the most important resource available to us, and that with training, motivation and confidence people usually surprise themselves and others with what they can achieve. For any school to succeed it is essential that the three major stakeholders, the students, the staff and the directors, feel deep involvement and personal satisfaction. If any one of these groups is not fundamentally comfortable in their participation then the school has no long term future. Indeed the successful growth of the company will depend upon how effectively it develops its staff and students."

Networking Table

A clearly marked "Networking Table" will be available at each luncheon for members and guests information. If you wish to bring special offers, information about your business, flyers etc to the lunch, you can now place it on the Networking Table rather than the lunch tables. This way everyone gets a chance to display what they offer.

Only CBWC information and sponsors material will be permitted on the lunch tables.

Thanks to our members for providing such a variety of information on a regular basis. The Committee encourages all members and guests to use the Networking Table as an opportunity to promote their business.

Members Speaking At Lunches

If you have a service or organisation to promote and you wish to speak at a lunch. Members are invited to speak for 2 minutes but you must pre-book to allow us to schedule time. This will make for easier facilitation at the lunch and also ensure you won't be forgotten. Because of demand,  once again contact Helen Bairstow at helen@e-mailmarketing.com.au or phone 4053 1873.

Pro-Arch Podiatry Centre - Telstra Australian Small Business of the Year Award are one of eight State Finalists!

The Telstra & Australian Governments' Small Business Awards are organised on the basis of business size. There are four categories in total.

The winner of each category then becomes eligible to be named the State or Territory Telstra Small Business of the Year.

The 2003 Telstra Australian Small Business of the Year Award will be awarded to one of the 8 State or Territory winners at the National Presentation Dinner, being held in Melbourne on Friday 15th August 2003.

The QLD MYOB Business Award for businesses who employee 5-10 staff, finalist were:

  • Pro-Arch Podiatry Centre (Cairns and Mackay)
  • Blue Banana Hair and Spa (Townsville)
  • Coronis Realty (Brisbane)
  • Design College Australia
  • Shieldcoat Pty Ltd
  • The Alchemy Cordial Company

This is the largest, most common category and usually the hardest to win as there are so many entrants. Over 100 entrants were then short listed to 6 finalists. Christine and Tyson Franklin from the Pro-Arch Podiatry Centre (pictured) took out this award.

The Qld Telstra and Australian Governments' Small Business Awards were held at the Grand Ball Room, Sheraton Hotel, Brisbane Tuesday night 15 July. The night was introduced and chaired by Kay McGrath, Channel 7 News Presenter, and various Ministers and Politicians were there.

Christine said this "It was just like the CBWC Awards Night ... Spot lights on the winners, drum rolls and emotional winner's music to walk up to the stage with. My husband Tyson was the one who did all the work with regards to the submissions, interviews etc. Tyson says the feeling is too hard to describe, he feels like he has just won an Academy Award."

The prizes for their category, sponsored by MYOB were a $5000 business development grant and $2000 worth of MYOB software and services. Plus 2 return tickets and accommodation to Melbourne for the National Awards on 15 August.

This allows you to stand in a new confidence when meeting people and business contacts.
You will learn how to;

  • break into groups
  • participate in and start up conversations
  • overcoming shyness and appear confident
  • remember names with simple techniques
  • starting up conversations
  • give the right impression
  • escape from non-productive conversations politely
  • how to make the best use of your business cards
  • shaking hands 2003 style

Did you know…
…your business name may not be your trade mark?

A registered trade mark identifies a product or service, distinguishing it from other similar products or services. If your business name is similar to someone else's trade mark, their trade mark will take precedence in a legal sense. To find our whether your new or existing business name is also registered as a trade mark, visit www.ipaustralia.gov.au or call 1300 65 10 10.
